Cuscuta sandwichiana, dodder. This Hawaiian native stem parasite is common in the coastal strand where it attaches to virtually any host plant, e.g., Ipomoea, as seen here. Small greenish flowers and orange-tinted stems are characteristic of this parasite. A row of minute haustoria can be seen on the stem in the lower center of the bottom photo. |
