Araceae This family belongs in the monocotyledons, although its leaves are often atypical in that they are often broad with netted venation. The inflorescence is very consistent in having a dense mass of apetalous flowers on a central spadix. The flowers are often enclosed in a leaf-like spathe which can be brightly colored. If you see this pattern you can be pretty sure you are looking at a member of the Araceae, wherever you are in the world. Examples include many indoor foliage plants (Spathiphyllum, Epipremnum, Monstera) perennials (Caladium, Arum, Zantedeschia) and wild plants (Arisaema, Symplocarpus) |
