 Abies ferreana Bord.-Rey & Gaussen 1947

Common Names

Taxonomic notes

Syn: A. forrestii var. ferreana (Bord.-Rey et Gaussen) Farjon; A. yuana Bord.-Rey et Gaussen; A. rolii Bord.-Rey et Gaussen; A. chayuensis Cheng et Fu (1). The descriptive information is from Farjon (1), who regards this as a variety of A. forrestii. Conversely, Fu and Li (2) treat it as a distinct species in the forthcoming (1999?) Flora of China, and moreover recognize two varieties, the type and longibracteata Fu et Li 1997 (see Remarks).

Description

Similar to A. forrestii, except that it has "(strongly) pubescent shoots, medial resin canals and smaller cones" (1).

Range

China and Tibet: NW Yunnan and SE Xizang, where found only in high mountains at ca. 4000 m elevation (1).

Observations

Remarks

The variety longibracteata "is readily distinguished from variety ferreana by having distinctly exserted, acuminate bract scales that are lanceolate at the apex and neither reflexed nor recurved". It occurs in high mountains of NW Yunnan, the type specimen collected 1990 at 3950 m elevation (2).
