Syn: J. gaussenii (1). Two varieties, J. chinensis var. sargentii and J. chinensis var. tsukusiensis (addressed under Remarks).

Range

Range: China (Anhui, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Hebei, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Nei Mongol, Shaanxi, Shandong , Shanxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan, Zhejiang), Mongolia, Japan, Korea, Russia (1, 5). In China, at elevations to 2300 m (5).

Juniperus chinensis var. tsukusiensis Masamune 1930 (syn: J. tsukusiensis Masamune 1929; J. sargentii sensu Sasaki 1928; J. chinensis var. sargentii sensu Sasaki 1930 non Henry is "[a] procumbent shrub. Leaves dimorphic; linear leaves 6 mm long, 1 mm broad, the apex acute, concave above, carinate beneath; scale leaves about 1.5 mm long, 1 mm broad. Cones globose, about 5 rnm in diameter. Seeds about 3, erect, trigonal-elliptic, 3 mm long, 2 mm wide." It is found in southernmost Japan (Islet Yakushima) and Taiwan: Chinsuishan (Seisuizan), Hualien Xian, at 2200 m (4). Collections have been described (3) at:

Hualien Xian: Taroko National Park. At Peak of Chingshuishan, a marble mountain. 121°38'21"E, 24°14'41"N, 2200-2400 m. A procumbent shrub, on exposed rocky slope.

Taroko National Park looks like a good place to see it.
