The
organizing committee has identified several areas that would facilitate research
on this model organism. Some of these goals require immediate attention
while others can be fulfilled in the future.
- The unique advantages of this organism for genetic studies
of important cell biological processes are clear. The community
of 600 researchers eagerly invites collaboration in order to accelerate
research in several fields. We hope the NIH initiative will encourage more new investigators to utilize the system.
- Expansion of the Web Server is the most
immediate requirement of the community. This invaluable resource is
currently run on a volunteer basis by several principal investigators.
They need technical support to accommodate the increasing amounts of
information to be posted.
- Microarray technology is extremely useful for
characterization of mutant phenotypes and needs to be increasingly supported
as the genome sequence is completed.
- A stock center will be needed as new
investigators join the field and request mutant strains for their research.
- Support for shotgun sequencing of the six
physically isolated chromosomes has been provided by the NIH, the European
Union, and the German DFG. Further support will be necessary for the
finishing steps necessary to generate complete coverage of the 34 Mb genome.
